Golfo Dulce

Tropical Fjord

Golfo Dulce is a gulf in Costa Rica, located at the south of the Province of Puntarenas, the bay separates the Osa Peninsula from the mainland Costa Rica. Golfo Dulce is surrounded by 56,000 hectares of protected forest areas.

Without a doubt, it is the best place to observe groups of dolphins traveling in numbers of hundreds of individuals and there is one of the best rivers for bird watching with around 250 different species in the area, the Esquinas River. Here you can find typical birds of the coastal marine area such as herons, terns, seagulls. But it is the habitat of the endemic species called Yellow-billed Cotinga Carpodectes antoniae.

Highlights

One Of Only Four Tropical Fjords In The World

Golfo Dulce is a unique place on the planet. This body of water is located in the south of the country, in the province of Puntarenas. Its crystal-clear waters of green and blue tones are part of the Pacific Ocean and bathe the coasts of the cantons of Osa and Golfito. It is 55 kilometers long and 21.5% of the species of the country's Pacific coast are concentrated in this area. This site is a tropical fjord formed as a result of the force of tectonic plates, that is, due to internal transformations of the Earth's crust, unlike most fjords that were created by the action of glaciers.

There are four tropical fjords in the world: the Gulf of Cariaco in Venezuela; Darwin Bay in the Galapagos Islands; Kaoe Bay in Indonesia; and the Golfo Dulce in Costa Rica.

Golfo Dulce has many great beaches and an incredible rainforest. Visitors can encounter up to four species of monkeys, including spider, howler and white-faced. As well as, poisonous frogs, jaguars and anteaters and a host of other incredible animals and birds.
