Rincón de la Vieja

Endless Magic At Your Feet

Witness where the volcanic component with its fumaroles, lagoons and Pailas de Barro, is combined with a great variety of ecosystems and impressive landscapes, waterfalls, areas of regenerating grasslands, and forests.

The park has a network of trails that range from those that are 100% natural, to others that are slightly modified and sections adapted to allow accessibility for people with special mobility needs. All trails offer a good chance of spotting more than 250 species of birds, mammals, insects, specially known for Morpho butterflies and reptiles.

Highlights

Volcanic Wellness

You will discover everything from a dry forest to a cloud forest, in the middle of a volcanic environment all on a short tour. The park has an area of 14,300 hectares, divided into two tourist visitation sectors: Las Pailas and Santa María. The park is home to the largest existing wild population of the purple guaria, national flower of Costa Rica.

Enjoy diverse volcanic manifestations from fumaroles, mud pans, water pans, fumarolic lagoon, small volcano, volcanic mud baths and hot springs with temperatures between 78 °C to 106 °C, passing through forests and open areas, where you can see the transition from dry forest to humid forest. A great place to enjoy the vast fauna that this joining point between dry and humid forest happens.

Catarata La Cangreja

The La Cangreja waterfall is 5 km away from the Parks entrance and the Escondida waterfall is 4.3 km away, to the latter the path is of high difficulty, due to the ascent that must be done. The estimated round trip time is between 4-5 hours.

The volcano divides the waters into two slopes, the Pacific and the Atlantic. Also in this area there are about main water sources that create 32 rivers in addition to other intermittent creeks making it a highly important water supply both for the fauna as for the country.

This beautiful waterfall with around 40 meters of drop is also known as “Blue Lagoon”, due to the characteristic color of the water.
